History and Art
A walk through history
Umbria is famous for its artistic jewels, with cities such as Perugia, Assisi and Gubbio guarding artistic and architectural treasures. The Basilica of St Francis in Assisi is an absolute masterpiece, with Giotto’s frescoes narrating the life of the saint. Perugia, with its medieval city centre, offers a stroll through historical buildings, churches and museums that tell the region’s thousand-year history.
Take a journey back in time by exploring the surrounding medieval villages of Panicale, Paciano and Città della Pieve. Admire the ancient architecture, wander the narrow cobbled streets and discover the hidden treasures of these small enchanted villages.
Crossing the very close border and entering Tuscan territory are some world-famous gems: Cortona, Arezzo, Montepulciano, Siena, Pienza.
With a little more distance you can comfortably reach Florence or Rome by train.
